I’ve been
watching the game of chess being played between the residents of Princeton (and
area) and Interior Health for the past several weeks.
It’s been an
interesting match.
It was announced
at a recent Town Council meeting that work is continuing on the recruitment of
new doctors to Princeton by IHA. That may be
true, but when you visit the IHA ‘recruitment’ website it doesn’t take long to
see how out of touch with Princeton Interior Health really is.
On the
community profile page on Princeton there’s two glaring errors I picked up on
right away. Under the heading of ‘economy’ it states “Forestry, agriculture,
tourism, cattle ranching” but there is no mention of mining. By my last count
there were no less than three mining companies setting up shop in the area.
However,
probably the biggest blunder made by IHA in their attempt at marketing
Princeton to doctors is related to education. On the
community profile it says we have two elementary, one intermediate and one
secondary school. In case you’ve forgotten, the intermediate school is now
Riverside Centre – a local cultural and social community centre. And there’s no
mention of the Skills Centre or The Bridge for additional educational
opportunities.
So when
Interior Health says they are working hard to resolve local issues it’s pretty
clear to me they have little knowledge of our community. When you have
little knowledge of a product, you can’t effectively promote it.
So what is IHA
really doing for Princeton?
