IHA Barely Answers Grand Forks Group - Final

Concerned Citizens for Community Health Care (Grand Forks, BC) met with IHA officials on May 23, 2012. Here are some of the questions asked, and some of the answers received.

Child care in our area comes under the purview of IHA.  We are sure you are aware that in small rural communities many parents work shifts, or are on-call. Licensed day-care facilities do not accommodate these workers.

In our small towns and cities, parents who have gone to school with, or have known for many years, a friend willing to look after a child on a moment’s notice, have entrusted the care of their children to these individuals.  In the very recent past, 2 unlicensed care-providers were closed by IHA staff for looking after too many children.

I did bring this issue forward at one of the forums held at the UBCM last September.  Minister DeJong commented that parents utilizing unlicensed day care would be fine until there was an incident.  I respectfully responded that there were incidents reported at licensed day-care facilities also.

Would you support parents in small rural communities in their endeavours to have the regulations relaxed to allow parents to choose a day-care provider they were comfortable with?

They wouldn’t answer this at all as according to Halpenny, it is a Provincial issue and of no concern to Interior Health.

Hospital Auxiliaries work extremely hard to raise money to purchase equipment for use in local hospitals.  We have been advised that equipment purchased for Boundary Hospital and other medical facilities has been relocated to another area without advising or consulting with the funder.  Do you believe that auxiliaries should be advised or consulted before such a move is made?

They say it never happened, however, no Auxiliary members were there to refute the answer, and I did not have sufficient information either to argue the point.
